A busy time in West Blocton!Notes from tonight’s Council Meeting: Mayor Sims announced that this is going to be a big weekend in West Blocton. The weekend starts Friday afternoon at 5:00 with the West Blocton High School football team’s Spring Game. The next morning will be the Cahaba Lily Festival and the West Blocton Farmers Market, both beginning at 9:00. Youth baseball and softball will have their Closing Day this Saturday for regular season play, too. They will be moving on to AllStars. With the next Council Meeting scheduled for Memorial Day, it was decided by the Council to move the date of the next meeting to Tuesday, May 28th. In appreciation to the Town of West Blocton, Barbara Smith presented the Mayor and Council with the newly adopted Town Flag. The flag depicts the Cahaba Lily, the Cahaba River, and the Coke Ovens. She also presented each of them with a special coin commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Cahaba Lily Festival and Alabama’s Bicentennial Celebration (see photos). Each visitor to the Cahaba Lily Center on Saturday will receive one of these commemorative coins. The ACES program requested a donation of $500, as has been customary in the past. In consideration for all the help they have provided with grant opportunities, landscape maintenance tools, and other items, the Council approved this donation. The Council voted to participate in the Sales Tax Holiday during the back to school shopping season. The dates for this Sales Tax reprieve will be July 19-21. Alexis Crawford with Turning Point Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Services presented information concerning the services they provide. (This information will be presented in a separate post) Jack’s Pharmacy offered to provide immunization shots to all Town employees at a special rate of $29.99. This would include flu, pneumonia, etc. The Town agreed to accept this rate and offer these shots to Town employees. Clay Richardson resigned from his seat as District 2 Councilman. His position will be filled at the next Council Meeting. Mr. Richardson recommended three people who he would like to see take his position on the Council. The Police Department was approved to purchase a new police vehicle. The total cost was $32,000, with $8,000 of this amount coming from West Blocton Police Department funds. All Council Members voted to approve this purchase, with the exception of Lynch and Galloway who voted no. The Police Department expense report was presented and approved. Also presented was the activity report. Council reports came next with no reports by McMinn or Galloway. Traci Costello asked about the street signs. Pam Morse stated that they were delivered two weeks ago. Fred Lynch mentioned the Mobile Home Ordinance and that the Zoning Board is working on it. The current ordinance is the procedure we go by until the new zoning is in place. The Council and Zoning Board will work together to get it done. After citizen comments, the meeting was adjourned. ... See MoreSee Less
